Performance Tech Motorsports to Compete in Final Round of IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge
Deerfield Beach, FL, October 11, 2023 - Performance Tech Motorsports is gearing up for a busy and exciting final round of the 2023 season, as they confirm entries in the final round of the season for both the IMSA Weathertech SportsCar Championship and the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge. The team will be heading to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, with Cameron Shields, Jonathan Woolridge, and Brian Thienes co-driving the #38 Ligier JSP320s in the 26th annual Motul Petit Le Mans, and Alex Kirby will be piloting the #7 Ligier JSP320s for the final two VP Racing SportsCar Challenge races.
The team will be eagerly welcoming back alumnus Cameron Shields, who previously stood on the podium with Performance Tech Motorsports in the Rolex 24 at Daytona earlier this year. Shields has a longstanding history with the team and also competed with the team in previous seasons, and saw a great deal of success and podium results together.
“I can’t wait to be back with Performance Tech Motorsports for the final IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race of the year at Road Atlanta for Petit Le Mans,” said Cameron Shields. “Not only is it the final race of the year, but also the conclusion of LMP3’s participation in the WeatherTech Championship for future seasons. I’ve been lucky enough to step on the podium at every IMSA endurance race with Performance Tech Motorsports aside from Petit Le Mans, so we will certainly have our eyes set on a trophy this coming Saturday!”
Jonathan Woolridge will also be returning to the team, this time making the step up into the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the first time. Wooldridge has competed with Performance Tech Motorsports in a number of rounds in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, in addition to claiming a win with the team earlier this year at his home track, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
“I am beyond excited to have this opportunity to run with Performance Tech Motorsports in the 26th running of Motul Petit Le Mans,” exclaimed Jonathan Woolridge. “The #38 car has felt like a second home to me for most of this year, and I can't think of a better way to end off the season than to be competing in the final IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race for the LMP3 Class. Being one of the ten Canadians on the grid will be a truly special feeling. I am confident Brent O’Neill and the team will be able to put on an outstanding performance this weekend!”
The team will also be welcoming Brian Thienes into their roster. The American driver also currently competes in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge and sits third in the championship standings.
“I’m very much looking forward to making my debut in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with Performance Tech Motorsports,” added Brian Thienes. “I’m grateful to Brent and the team for the opportunity, and I can’t wait to work and drive alongside Cameron and Jonathan. We’ll be doing everything we can to secure a great result in the final event of the season!”
Additionally, the team will also be competing in the final round of the season in the IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge, with Alex Kirby returning with the #7 Ligier JSP320s for the final two races of the championship. Kirby has previously scored podium results in the series at both Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and VIRginia International Raceway, and will be looking to do the same this time around as well.
The event will take place from October 11th to 14th, with practice sessions taking place on Thursday, followed by Qualifying on Friday afternoon. The 26th Annual Motul Petit Le Mans is set to commence on Saturday, October 14th at 11:40 AM ET and conclude ten hours later at 9:40 PM ET.
