IMSA Announces Modified 2020 Race Schedule
DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. (May 15, 2020) – Friday, May 15, at 11:15 a.m. ET the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) announced the modified 2020 race schedule for the WeatherTech Sportscar Championship and Prototype Challenge series.
IMSA currently plans to run non spectator races for the unforeseeable future. As always the teams’ and fans’ best interest are at the root of these decisions.
Below find the official statement made by IMSA regarding the new schedule.
“In a series of video conferences with stakeholders earlier today, IMSA revealed its plans to return to racing this summer with a revised 2020 calendar for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
The WeatherTech Championship will return July 4 at Daytona International Speedway. This Fourth of July event will feature an evening race with WeatherTech as its entitlement partner and a live television broadcast on NBCSN.
The six-race 2020 IMSA Prototype Challenge season, which opened with a three-hour race at Daytona International Speedway on Jan. 4, will resume on the weekend of July 17-18 at Sebring International Raceway as part of a revised calendar unveiled today by IMSA officials.
The Sebring event will run as a companion to IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge races, which is the case for all six of the series’ race weekends in 2020. The IMSA Prototype Challenge season will reach its halfway point at Road America on the weekend of July 31-Aug. 2.
VIRginia International Raceway kicks off the second half of the season on the weekend of Aug. 21-23. While VIR hosted IMSA Prototype Challenge in 2018 and 2019, the series was not originally scheduled to visit the facility in 2020. However, the VIR round replaces the Canadian Tire Motorsport Park event that has been canceled for this season.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course will host the penultimate round of the season on the weekend of Sept. 25-27, with the season finale set for Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on Oct. 14-17.
Aside from January’s Daytona event, all other IMSA Prototype Challenge races in 2020 will be one hour and 45 minutes in length.
“IMSA is grateful to all of our promoter partners for collaborating with us to develop a revised schedule of outstanding events,” said IMSA President John Doonan. “Our No. 1 priority since March has been to get back to racing as safely and as quickly as possible, and this revised schedule is evidence of that. We appreciate the patience, cooperation, and input of our IMSA stakeholders, and we all are very much looking forward to going racing again this summer and putting on amazing races for our audience.”
Further NBC Sports television broadcast information and any additional details will be announced soon.”
Performance Tech Motorsports will share further information on the situation and upcoming events as they are made by the sanctioning body and the United States government.
