Performance Tech Continues to Lead LMP2 Endurance Competition
WATKINS GLEN, New York (June 30, 2019)- Performance Tech Motorsports walks away from the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen with its IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and MICHELIN Endurance Cup points championship lead intact.
The team leads the overall championship by one point and the endurance championship by four points. Podium availability keeps the points battle tight between the competition but nonetheless fierce. Performance Tech led almost all of the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen before an on-track incident would restrain the team to a second-place finish in the LMP2 Class.
Kyle Masson, Cameron Cassels and Andrew Evans all took turns leading the LMP2 Class. The No. 38 Centinel Spine prototype breezed past the competition early in the race with Masson behind the wheel. Masson avoided incident after incident at the front of the pack all while battling with the faster Dpi Class. Cassels quickly settled into the car, picking up where Masson left off and driving his most flawless stint to date. Evans hopped in just past the halfway point amidst the GTLM leader battle where contact would inadvertently push the team to second place.
“At the end of the day this weekend was good,” O’Neill said. “Unfortunately, Andrew got caught up with the GTLM cars and were sandwiched between them which really ended our race. Kyle did an amazing job though, battling with DPi’s even when BoP was against us. Cameron’s really got the car figured out now, so he made great progress. Andrew adapted quickly and ran a good pace. Kyle’s qualifying lap was faster than the prototype pole position last year so we can’t be mad. Now, we just need to look forward to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park next weekend.”
Performance Tech Motorsports has a quick turnaround as it heads directly to Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for the Mobil 1 Sports Car Grand Prix. Masson and Cassels return to the sprint-race format of two hours and 40-minutes multi-class racing. The pair take to the 10 turn, 2.6-mile track Friday, July 5th for Free Practice One and Two. Saturday, July 6 hosts qualifying for the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at 12:25 p.m. ET and the IMSA Prototype Challenge race at 4:30 p.m. live on imsatv.imsa.com.
Finally, the green flag flies on the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the 2 hour and 40-minute Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix at 1:05 p.m. The Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix is broadcast through its entirety for the first time on NBC Sports. “The car was fantastic,” Cassels said. “This is a challenging track made even harder because I had to adapt between the Lamborghini and the LMP2 all weekend. It was going well until GT traffic decided to play which really hurt our race. At the end of the day its good points. I’ll be pulling double duty between an LMP3, and LMP2 or a Lamborghini for the rest of the season so I’m excited to get this next stretch of races underway. The team did a great job of setting up the car and I’m ready for CTMP. I also really want to thank my wife and kids for coming out and surprising me this weekend, it made an awesome event even better.”

“It was a tough weekend that didn’t end the way we wanted it to, but I always look forward to coming to this track,” Masson said. “Watkins Glen is my favorite track on the circuit. I love the way it flows and how it suits the downforce of this car, so I was really excited coming in this weekend. I know I'm strong at this track especially when we come in with a car as great as we did. Like Cameron said, you win some you lose some. We as a team just need to keep our heads high and get ready for next weekend.”

“To start the whole Performance Tech team did an amazing job this weekend,” Evans said. “I got caught up in a GTLM battle that involved bad blocking but also poor decisions on my part that took us out. The crew was able to get the car back out which was incredible, so we were still able to finish the race. Kyle and Cameron did an amazing job and I can’t wait to get back with them at the Petit Le Mans.”
