The Return: Dan Goldburg back in IMSA Action

Motorsport is often referred to as a bug, as if the passion for the sport alone is something infectious but the drive to develop racecraft extends further into series championships. Performance Tech Motorsports driver Dan Goldburg relates to the feeling as he makes his return to the IMSA Prototype Challenge series.

Goldburg last competed with Performance Tech in IMSA sanctioned competition in 2013 when the series featured two classes of Elan DP 02 Lites prototypes. The cars were open cockpit prototypes similar to the Prototype Challenge car that ran in the, then, ALMS series. While the cars were collectively retired only two seasons ago the prototype landscape seems to have adapted quickly enough to make the change seem like a distant memory.

Times have changed but so has Goldburg. Though he has spent time away from an IMSA championship chase he hasn’t spent that much time out of the cockpit of a racecar. He’s continued his relationship with Team Principal Brent O’Neill and has been active in the racing scene.

“We’re really happy to have Dan back with us in IMSA because he’s a great guy and a great racer,” O’Neill said. “He’s a very steady driver and he works hard to be the best he can be behind the wheel. I think he’ll make a great teammate for Blake because they do have a similar approach to racing.”

Goldburg will share the No. 6 Motel 6 Ligier LMP3 with Blake Mount in 2020. The duo previously raced together at the MICHELIN IMSA SportsCar Encore for the first time where they celebrated winning pole before finishing sixth.

"I am pumped for this season,” Goldburg said. “I'm the most excited for this race season than any before, and I've been racing since the mid 2000s. Brent paired Blake and I together and we felt a quick connection at the Encore. We share a common approach to racing including our pre-race prep, data analysis, and desire to perform for our sponsors, teammate, team and fans. It's going to be a wild ride this year and I can't wait to get to Daytona and kick off 2020 with our new sponsor Motel6! I’m very proud to be representing their colors on track and hope we can give them a good showing in our first round. "

Mount returns for his second season of Prototype Challenge with Performance Tech. His talent and recent experience paired with Goldburg and his seasoned professionalism is sure to be a winning combination in 2020. While some drivers will still be gaining familiarity with one another at the Roar Before the 24 weekend, the Encore allowed Mount and Goldburg to be prepared to get straight to work at Daytona International Speedway January 3.

"I am looking forward to many things that may transpire this season. I have a new teammate and someone that I respect, and feel is very competitive,” Mount said. “Dan Goldburg and I will work all season to make a competitive platform. With it being Dan's return to IMSA/Performance Tech I feel his history will help us not only mesh well but achieve the results we desire. It is also my second year with Performance Tech, who has, in my eyes, become my first ever racing family. I am beyond excited because I truly believe in every single facet of the team, in every single individual working hard to make us all successful.”

Goldburg and Mount begin the Prototype Challenge season Jan. 3 at the ROAR Before The 24 on the Daytona International Speedway road course. The weekend begins with a full day of practice Friday, Jan. 3. Saturday, Jan. 4 the duo qualifies at 8:45 a.m. ET before the green flag falls on the first endurance race of the season at 12:15 p.m. The three-hour race is broadcast on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 4:30 p.m. ET in a condensed format.
