With the merger of North Americas two premier road racing series, Grand Am and the American LeMans Series taking place this year, the Performance Tech Motorsports team and our competitors came to this year’s Sebring races feeling that this would probably be the last Sebring race week ‘as we know it’. Everyone wanted to leave a mark in the record book.
At the last race of 2012, finishing off the most successful season in Performance Tech Motorsports history, one team member described it as, “The crew and drivers tied a red ribbon with a bow around the fourteen race Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Series season as a present for the entire team to celebrate at tonight’s annual IMSA Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Awards Banquet”.
16-year-old Tristan Nunez stunned race fans at Road Atlanta as he crossed the finished line on Thursday afternoon in third place after dropping the depth of the field from first place due to a drive through penalty, putting his potential championship in limbo. The IMSA Lites driver then advanced 14 positions to finish on the podium and clinch the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Powered by Mazda Series' point's championship. In doing so, he became the youngest point's champion in the series' history, the fifth American to secure the title, and gave his Performance Tech Motorsports team their first team championship title in IMSA Lites.
